Custom woodwork by Fred Ingate Details: Black Walnut Table $870.00
This Black Walnut table features an eye-catching, beautifully-grained drawer front. Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is interesting for many reasons. It is one of our most valuable native hardwoods, especially for gunstocks and furniture. Because of this, in some areas all the larger trees have been cut - but the species itself remains abundant. While it is a beautiful forest tree, the roots give off chemicals that inhibit the growth of nearly anything else trying to grow next to it. Trees quickly sprout in gardens and landscapes from nuts buried by squirrels, and once established can be hard to remove. You can quickly identify a walnut sprout by breaking off a stem - it has a distinct and (to most people) disagreeable odor. On the other hand, the nuts are a valuable food source for people and wildlife. The Cherokee still use walnut husks and bark to make a dye for their traditional basketwork. Once upon a time the nut husks were crushed and used as a fish stunner, but this practice is now outlawed. |
