Custom woodwork by Fred Ingate Details: Mahogany Sleigh Bed $3,200.00
True Mahogany comes only from the Americas. The others being sold as Asian and African mahogany are somewhat similar, but none are true mahogany. Trade names for wood may or may not have any basis in fact and many names are created only as a marketing tool. Hundreds of years ago European craftsmen valued mahogany so much that they preferred it over walnut, which they came to see as a secondary wood. WWI changed that when most of Europe's walnut trees were cut to produce gunstocks, walnut being one of the best if not the best wood for a rifle stock. Some types of mahogany are virtually gone, such as Cuban Mahogany, all of which was cut long ago. I have one small block that was given to me years ago by the elderly widow of a long dead wood carver. I keep it as a sample. |
