The slats on all beds I build fit into notches in the rails to prevent sliding. This Mission style bed was built of Black Cherry (Prunus serotina). Cherry has long been valued as a beautiful wood for furniture and interior finishing. Cherries are among the most widely eaten food plants for all North American wildlife. Strangely enough, the leaves and twigs of cherry are "sometimes" poisonous to livestock.
